Laurance Hearne Armour, longtime figure in Armour and Co. and founder of the La Salle National Bank of Chicago in 1940, died Monday in Chicago from pneumonia and related complications. He was 64 and served as chairman of the bank’s board and as a director of Armour and Co.

ATICAN announced Monday that Archbishop Valeriano Gracias of Bombay is named to the College of Cardinals, succeeding Carlo Agostini. He becomes India's first cardinal and part of Pope Pius XII's plan to fill the College to 70 members at the next consistory. The historic appointment marks a two century gap in full cardinal membership.
Federal Judge John Knight granted an eight day injunction under the Taft Hartley Act restraining American Locomotive Co workers at the Dunkirk plant from striking.
