A gas stove and floor heater connected by copper wire caused oxygen depletion. The setup was in the bedroom and the children were found in one bed while Mrs Arellano lay at the foot of the children's bed near a Christmas tree. Arellano, a railroad worker, had asked his doctor if he should skip work to care for them. The door was unlocked when called.
