A desperate woman in a city near me walked and considered suicide on a Sunday in 1923. A radio sermon about the God of the Struggle urged not to quit, saying God shares our sorrows and grieves when we grieve. The woman chose to live, moved by the preacher’s message.
Chairman Vinson said changes to selective service are needed to meet Truman's push for a 3.5 million man armed force. He expects revisions to be prepared for a January House vote, with possible extension of service from 21 to 24 months and debate over lowering draft age to 18.

The United States called for a 21-nation Western Hemisphere foreign ministers conference to discuss communism's threat to the free world. The State Department said the meeting would address urgent problems of common interest, with Washington hoping to host in mid February. Howard G Miller Jr said this follows Truman's address and would be convened under Article 39 of the Bogotá Charter.

Fern P Doty of 24442 Harnson Street resigns as executive secretary of the Counteil Bluffs Chamber of Commerce effective January 1. Lewis W Ross, chamber president, announced the move on Saturday. In Roanoke Mrs Ava P Campbell gave birth on Saturday becoming a mother for the sixth time and soon after a daughter arrived. Her daughter Mrs Doris George 20 had a son a few hours after the birth of the girl. Both babies were delivered by the same doctor. In London Winston Churchill plans a holiday to Marrakech North Africa for several weeks accompanied by Mrs Churchill.

Gen Wu Hsi n chuan told reporters that China would try to advise volunteers in Korea to end fighting early, but endorsed Soviet terms for peace and rejected foreign drops. The UN said Peiping would leave for home Tuesday while cease fire talks would continue. Wu criticized the UN assembly decision as a trap and urged U.S. forces from Formosa, seeking China’s UN seat.
Tokyo dispatch reports Chinese forces within three miles of Hungnam as they press toward the U S beachhead in northeast Korea. American and fleet air units strike at advancing columns amid snow and haze while 10th corps withdraws. officials call the Hungnam situation not disastrous as Allied forces consolidate and assess western Korea.
Washington reports President Truman remains resolute in keeping Secretary of State Dean Acheson in place. An official says Truman views attacks on Acheson as attacks on his foreign policy while Acheson’s allies note Republican moves to oust him do not alter plans for Acheson’s Brussels trip. The Friday session will approve plans for a Western European defense force including American and German units. General Eisenhower is expected back in Washington midweek.
The Defense Department on Saturday identified 584 additional American casualties in Korea. Casualty List No 177 records 60 killed 450 wounded 30 injured in accidents and 44 missing.
The three day railroad strike ended in major terminals with no wage settlement. Christmas packages resumed moving as post office embargoes were lifted and Freight and mail operations began. Railway Express Agency reopened shipments across 15 eastern, northwestern and midwestern states. The union had sought a 40 hour week at 48 hour pay plus existing benefits for non operating workers.
