Gen George C Marshall testified before the Pearl Harbor committee that Axis intercepted telephone warnings risked betraying codes and hampered timely alerts to Hawaii. He noted Japan might have seen a war warning as a trigger and discussed Britain’s access to decoded Japanish messages and prior warnings to U.S. posts.
More than 25000 servicemen are due to arrive Sunday at three east coast and six west coast ports aboard 25 troop-carriers. New York expects three ships, Boden two ships, and Newport News Virginia among others. Pacific arrivals include 5400 at San Francisco and 3300 at Los Angeles, with additional crews scheduled for San Diego Forbane and Seattle.
The city announces Friday paper salvage pickup by six districts led by City Salvage Chairman H E Johnston. Districts include Dodge McMillen Second Avenue Race Bloomer and StFrancis.

Pottawattamie County lagged at about 45 percent of its 852,000 quota. sales will continue and be credited toward the county quota. Five national firms pledged purchases: Union Pacific Railroad 150,000. Rock Island Railroad 50,000. Kressen Five and Ten Stores 5,000. Singer Sewing Machines 5,000. Cooperative Oil Co 1,650.
The XB-42 bomber crossed the nation at about 432 miles per hour, taking off from Long Beach at 12.23 p.m. CST and roaring over Holling Field. Pilots Lt Col H. Warden and Capt Glann W. Edwards flew the aircraft with a weight around 4,000 pounds and about 1,400 gallons of fuel. The flight benefited from favorable winds and a design using two Allison 12 cylinder engines driving long shafts to two propellers. A Saturday report claims Russia will furnish Chinese government forces to occupy three cities forming a backbone for Manchuria. Ho Ping Pao lists Dairen as a free port, with Changchun and Harbin targeted next. The capital Changchun lies 390 miles northeast of Dairen, Harbin 150 miles north of Changchun. Occupation is expected soon.
A twin engine C-47 attempting a second landing in a snow storm at SHILNGS Montana crashed early Saturday killing 19 of 23 aboard, most are army overseas veterans. The craft burned a mile west of the municipal airport en route from Newark New Jersey to Seattle. Four passengers remained in critical condition.
The Republican National Committee unanimously backed the mid term platform but will develop it with input from non con gressional members. A seven member subcommittee will gather suggestions from all Republicans to keep the platform responsive to the party base and current movement.
The US mediation service said Chicago regional director William White will preside at a Tuesday hearing in Washington over a strike by more than 5,000 truck drivers from 160 Midwest firms. The three week walkout has disrupted over the road operations across seven states. The hearing is set for 2 pm BST with Concilia tion Commissioner Howard Plank assisting. Union leaders say negotiations broke down over wages and working conditions while the AFL group and trucking association refused talks.
The provincial administration of Rusmag occupied Saxony issued a decree Saturday prohibiting the manufacture and sale of all toys of a military character and ordering owners to surrender such toys to the police.
Detroit AP report says CIO United Auto Workers High Council opposes President Truman’s wage and facts plan, urging a continued nationwide GM strike. The council condemns the proposal as anti labor and calls locals to vote no while mobilizing political power to block the legislation.
Washington officials expect Secretary of State Byrnes to press for a formula giving smaller nations a voice in atomic energy. Molotov will be met in Moscow next week to seek Russian support.
