A new $225,000 10-room central school will replace eight small units in Lewis Township Pottawattamie County. The modern facility near the Iowa School for the Deaf will serve the township with a nine acre site, bus transportation, and facilities for a future hot lunch program. Sixteen teachers will staff both the new school and the existing Manawa unit, with Loren Kersler as principal coordinating duties.
Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey urged American Legion leaders to press Congress to enact Universal Military Training, noting Congress backed the 1951 Selective Service Act but no peacetime UMT law is in effect. Former national commander Warren Atherton proposed the Legion present its UMT demand to Congress next January without waiting for presidential or new Congress positions.
A hot humid Sunday is on tap for Southwest Iowa with a high near 90. Sunday night should be fair and mild with a low around 68. Iowa reported no heavy rainfall Friday and Saturday for the first time in about a week as mid afternoon temps rose nationwide with very uncomfortably high humidity.

Governor Allan Shivers held a growing lead for a third term as results from the Texas Election Bureau at 10:30 p.m. CDT showed him ahead of Ralph Yarborough by 50,534 votes. With 155 of 254 counties reporting, Shivers had 400 909 to Yarborough 350 375 amid Eisenhower’s backing.
Des Moines resident Henry H. Culbertson an 18 year IRS employee was electrocuted at his Des Moines home Saturday while using a power buffer. He touched an exposed wire bit that had wound around the machine while standing on damp ground.
Anna Warren, aunt of Chief Justice Earl Warren, died Saturday in Minneapolis. A native of Sheldahl Iowa she was a retired school teacher and a assistance agent.
State Conservation Officer Harald Borwick reported Saturday that Lake Manawa rose about 5 inches in a week due to heavy rains and pumping from the Missouri River. The level is now 29 inches above the start of the pumping season in early April, a record weekly increase for this summer.
Edwin and Mrs Harvis of Council Bluffs weigh a peach claimed to weigh a pound. The peach editor contemplates rules for future entries as locals claim the oversized fruit and a seven foot begonia steal the spotlight in their home.
Federal Housing Administrator Albert M. Cole announced action to recover unearned profits on government guaranteed loans. Sidney Larner of Linwood Parks Inc was ordered to convene stockholders and replace directors. new directors to be named by FHA which holds the preferred stock. The Linwood Park case involved $11,000 capital, $8,875,000 FHA insured mortgages, project cost $6,662,500 and windfalls of $2,426,841.
Edwin J. Krattmeyer aged 39 of Davenport died in Muscatine Memorial Hospital after injuries from a car crash near Muscatine Thursday morning. The accident occurred when two vehicles collided on the highway close to town. Krattmeyer was a cattleman identified in local notices as a resident of Davenport.
U S officials fear an EDC defeat would hurt European security and French American cooperation. The plan aimed to rearm West Germany with French safeguards and linked Franco German ties to Western unity. Washington expects no viable alternative to EDC and notes France's ratification key to success. Secretary Dulles plans Manila trip to push Southeast Asia defense talks.
Paris reports a tentative agreement to postpone debate on the Europe Defense Community treaty to allow new negotiations on changes. Premier Mendes meets Cabinet to discuss the delay as Assembly committees push for rejection while a resumption timetable is unclear, aiming for mid to late September.
Gunmen breached four safeguards at Suffolk County Jail near Charles Street on a Saturday afternoon freeing Elmer Durke, a New York criminal, in a daylight escape that matched a prepared plan. Guards pursued. Durke fled to a waiting car as an accomplice menaced a guard. Police tied the raid to a broader manhunt across New England and New York.
