A West German CDU deputy warned at a Berlin news conference that the Adenauer government faces danger of driving Germany toward war with American prodding. In East Berlin, the Communist government publicized former Parliament deputy Karl Schmidt-Wittmack as a new international press figure. He, age 40, formerly CDU deputy chairman in Hamburg, crossed into the East with his wife and daughter a week earlier.
The School Board, noting Longfellow School crowding with 23 rooms and a library, approved a six room addition and potential two more rooms as part of a long range program. Enrolment rose 209 since 1952 to 859, justifying expanded facilities and more teacher pupil conferences.

Buena Vista County auditor Francis Gibson resigns after admitting he took about $2000 of county funds. He is jailed in Spencer on a $3500 bond. Buena Vista jail is reportedly full. County officials announced the resignation following an audit finding and prosecutors filed charges of embezzlement.
Republicans and Democrats stake 17 states in a high stakes Senate battle for the 84th Congress. The parties split near even, with 37 Senate seats and all 435 House seats up for grabs. Key Republican targets include Cooper Kentucky and Kuchel California. Democrats eye Anderson New Mexico and Douglas Illinois among others. Party leaders forecast possible upsets and plan a GOP blueprint at Cincinnati meeting with Vice President Nixon.
Secretary Weeks eases U S embargoes on trade with the Soviet Union and European Communist states, reducing embargoed goods by about half while maintaining bans on China, North Korea, and Vietnam. The move aims to spur East West commerce but officials say a rapid increase is unlikely.
Joseph Respelters, 26, was accused of manslaughter after the fatal Aug. 19 shooting of Floyd Coffelt, 25, in the Cooper County home area. A foreign jury ruled the act not committed with felonious intent. Respelters pleaded innocent and was bound to the grand jury with a $3,000 bond.
