Showers linger and humidity remains high across Omaha area as heat persists. Forecast calls for 90s highs with 70s to start, variable clouds, and scattered thundershowers by Friday or Saturday. Des Moines reports 93 amid midweek heat. New York and Philadelphia hit near 100.
Leo Norton, 36, was seriously injured Wednesday four miles north of Victor while working with an Iowa county bridge crew. A pile driver lead broke, crushing him against the bank. He was taken to Mineral Springs hospital for treatment.

Bruntlett, on death row for the 1919 slaying of livestock dealer Percy Smith, now says Smith is alive. Gov. R P Borman of Irvington Nebraska started construction of a $70,000 International Harvester farm machinery sales and service building at 1706 West Broadway. Hansen and Hansen are contractors. The cream glazed tile front spans 82 feet with a full height plate glass display and a 95 by 138 foot lot. The daylight workshop and parts room will be at the rear. Occupancy is set for about January 1.
About 65 Iowa State University Scottish Highlanders will perform at the Chicago railroad fair on September 30 as part of Iowa day festivities. The bagpipe band was invited by the railroad fair committee and Gov. Robert D. Blue is also slated to participate in the events.
Keokuk saw a blaze in the downtown riverfront section on Wednesday that drew no fire department response. Omaha officials and Des Moines executives met in Omaha on Wednesday to discuss a potential private purchase of Western Iowa Power Company. WASHINGSAD. Four 1 cent cards bearing army and air force seals will be issued to volunteers rejected for physical reasons as tokens of appreciation. Ordered by Secretary of the Army Royals and Secretary of the Air Force Symington, the first cards will be distributed about Sept 1. The card states the recipient's patriotic intent and notes he may reapply if regulations change.
London diplomatic sources report Prime Minister Stalin agrees in principle to western supervision of a Russian currency in Berlin. Talks among the four occupying powers aim to resolve Berlin currency issues, with a potential four power communique once an agreement is reached.

President Truman signed an executive order creating an emergency board in the dispute between the railway and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. The action, announced aboard the presidential yacht Williamsburg at Yorktown Virginia, postpones the strike set for 6 p m Saturday on the Pittsburgh and West Virginia line.
State police issued an alarm for Harry Martin Brooks of Greenwich to question him in the fatal shooting of Joseph B. Watkins, 54, outside Princeton Inn. Mercer County Prosecutor Volpe asked Greenwich Police Chief Gleason to arrest Brooks on murder charges. Brooks is linked to Watkins as a partner in the Standard Foundation.
U S authorities arrest Mrs Iva Toguri D Aquino in San Francisco case charging treasonable activities during World War II. The Tokyo Rose persona applied to six English speaking Japanese women who broadcast propaganda to U S servicemen across the Pacific.
Workers at a gravel pit on the Fred Schaumberg farm 12 miles southwest of here pumped water to tap a four foot geyser draining nearby farmers wells. A Wright county dragline released an underground stream creating a 24 inch water jet about four feet high filling the pit with about 20 feet of water, forcing farmers who rely on artesian wells to haul water for livestock.
The House un American Activities Committee reports it will turn testimony to the Justice Department with recommendations and may pursue perjury charges against witnesses. The inquiry focuses on whether Alger Hiss or Whittaker Chambers led a prewar communist underground, as Chambers accuses Hiss.
