Edward Kennedy reports Allied forces advancing in southern France as U S troops consolidate a striking force from Riviera beachheads. American casualties total under 300 while German prisoners, including a general and staff, number about 7 500 with more yet to be counted.
Allied forces including the 3rd 45th and 36th divisions struck inland through the maritime Alps and extended a 50 mile beachhead along the southern French coast. By Friday they reached within 19 miles of Toulon and six miles of Cannes while using aircraft carriers for air support and rapid reinforcements poured ashore.
Gov. Thomas E. Dewey announced a speaking drive for September 7 and 8 in Pennsylvania and Kentucky as he builds momentum for his presidential campaign. Secretary Paul Lockwood said Dewey would address crowds in Philadelphia and Louisville, with potential further appearances.
Berlin reports say Germans set fire to towns and villages along East Prussian borders to deny use to advancing Russians. Moscow radio cites Red Army gains across the boundary with heavy fighting near East Prussia and across the Baltic states. Reports mention 223,000 plus Soviet troops, Romanian sector flare ups, and Russian advances in the Carpathians and Norway region as Germans retreat and redeploy divisions.
United States cases of infantile paralysis rose to 32,992 by Aug 3, 1944, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis reports citing Public Health Service figures. The increase surpasses totals for the same period in 1943 by 1,226 cases.
WPB Chairman Donald M. Nelson urged Congress to enact strong penalties for anyone who discloses confidential industrial information given to government agents. He pressed for a bill by Rep. Summ ers to punish disclosure to competitors or misuse in war production with a 1000 fine and one year in jail for government employees who reveal such information. Sumners had no known prompting case for the request.
Scout and Salvage officials announced all salvage paper in the residential district was cleared and en route to wartime reconversion. General Salvage Chairman Robert R. O’Brien praised the Scouts and urged public cooperation while progress details and tonnage data awaited final tally.
Forecast calls for warmer, invigorating weather across Iowa from Friday morning with temperatures rising in the afternoon and evening and into the week ahead. Friday's high near 79 expected in the locale with some places reaching the low 80s while early temps dipped to 57 locally. no precipitation reported and skies to be fair to partly cloudy over the weekend.
ANEW DELHI Wavell rejects Mohandas Gandhi's request for a conference to discuss independence. Gandhi says India must gain strength to wrest power from Britain. Wavell offers to consider any definite constructive policy instead and notes British control over 400 million Indians.

Grand championship in market swine and market litter classes went to Treynor’s Robert Gonos with reserve titles to Robert Jenser of Neola. many girl exhibits are near completion as judging resumes Friday afternoon. Saturday marks Farm Bureau day with a high school horse exhibition and a community picnic.
Rural residents in Pottawattamole county are asked to bundle old magazines catalogs and salvage papers and leave bundles by mail boxes. Carriers will collect them for transport to a salvage depot during the campaign to ease a critical paper shortage.
Senator Murray proposes a Missouri Valley Authority to unify development of power, navigation, and flood control across North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri. A three member board appointed by the president would oversee dams and projects, funded by congressional appropriations, with a goal to submit a unified plan within two years.
Allied warplanes pounded German air forces west and east of the Sviné barrier and downed 23 enemy aircraft in renewed air battles. Liberators struck Roye field north of Paris, while Fortresses and Liberators attacked bases at Metz Nancy Essy St Dizier and Romilly sur Seine and hit an airplane factory near Metz.
The appointment of Rep. Robert Ramspeck Democrat Georgia as director of the speakers bureau for the Democratic National Committee’s presidential campaign was announced by DNC chairman Robert E. Hennigan Thursday.
German commander Col. Andreas von Aulock surrenders the St Malo citadel after an 11 day defense under heavy American fire. Allied HQ confirms fall but not whether Aulock was captured. The siege began Aug 7 as Patton's 3rd Army attacked Brittany. Aulock had earlier earned the Knight's Cross for Eastern Front actions.
The fight over which agency should dispose of more than 12 million acres acquired for war ends heatedly in Washington. Norman Littell of the Justice lands division faulted Clayton for putting the RFC in charge, while Littell said agriculture and interior should handle the lands with added department experience. Clayton to be called again next week.

Entries in the flower division must be received by 12 noon Aug. 28 with closing at 12 20 a m.

Secretary Hull signals a potential United Nations conference on security plans this fall to establish a world peace agency before the final postwar settlement. Talks with Russia Britain and the United States at Dumbarton Oaks may decide if the agency is created by treaty or national legislation. Hull stressed first building dispute settlement machinery and urged public interest in the peace agency.
