The AFA honored Sen Stuart Symington aviation's man of the year and awarded Arthur Godfrey and Lt Col Frank Everest Jr for contributions to air age education and speed records.
In Huelva Spain Amer icans and Spaniards marked the departure of Christopher Columbus on his voyage to the new world. John Davis Lodge U S ambassador to Spain and local officials praised the explorer who opened a sea route to trade and travel. Columbus sailed August 3 1492 from Palos de Moguer across the Tinto river. A plaque was unveiled on the Columbus monument at the junction of the Tinto and Odiel rivers.
Manawa Lake water level rose 4.2 inches in the week due to pumping, reaching four feet while it was two feet when pumping began in June. Clyde Talley of Conservation, Inc. credits Missouri River water diversions and Tuesday night gains. a $3,975 fund total remains short of the $500 goal, with completion of the Mosquito Creek diversion slated for Oct 9 and potential earlier finish.
The Iowa American Legion opens its 38th annual convention eve Monday in Sioux City. National Commander J Adding ton Wagner will speak at the opening session. George Flasschoen, a 29 year old former Belgian Congo native, taught and coached in Silver City this past year. Born in Africa, his family fled Nazi occupied Belgium, his father executed, and the group endured concentration camps before escaping to Spain. He later studied at Bethel College, married in Kansas, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen now teaching and coaching for seven years. His grandfather Gustav Flasschoen rose to fame with WWI era paintings, a talent the grandson sometimes pursues in oils. The family includes five children Jacque Janice Jerrel Janine and Jerome.
Partly cloudy and hot conditions forecast for Council Bluffs with highs in the upper 90s and mild nights.
