Geraldine Goodwin of South Sioux City Neb was injured in a late Saturday night automobile crash two and a half miles south of Missouri Valley on Highway 75. She was taken to Clercy Hospital with a back injury. condition listed as good. Details of the accident were not immediately learned.
The cradle has a 100 year family lineage from a St. Louis store to Missouri and Nebraska homes. It passed through the Rhower family at Fort Calhoun before becoming the Risney family heirloom. Now used for a great grandson and a newborn, the walnut cradle remains in good condition with its original carved rockers.
Roy Carver, 4 year old? Muscatine, Iowa, aber typo: 2-Roy Carver, flew solo across the Atlantic in a Beechcraft Bonanza from Newfoundland to Paris with a stop in the Azores. He averaged about 165 mph, reached the Azores in 10 hours and used extra fuel on the second leg to Paris. He plans to fly to Athens Wednesday to meet a company agent and return across the Atlantic in September.
Whitesburg Kentucky reports a car crash on Pine Mountain eight miles south of the leathercounty community near Millstone. The 1941 automobile, brakes failed, plunged over the mountain and burned. only the driver Hexie Maxie, 33, escaped. His wife Elsie Maxie and six children perished, along with Maxie’s sister Lula Brown and four Brown children. A neighbor Martha Gibson, 15, was also among the casualties. Maxie, badly burned, aided wreckage with an ax until rescue arriving. He was en route to Fleating hospital when the crash occurred. The incident was described as the worst single car toll on record.
Canada will construct a third cross country radar chain to warn of enemy bombers as Russia develops long range jets. Assistant Defense Secretary John A. Hanna called the line the best possible system and noted Canada will build it with no U.S. troop involvement. Hanna, who left the Pentagon, remains on the U. S. Defense Board.
A sweeping new manpower plan seeks universal military training and compulsory service in a new reserve to prepare the nation for possible war with the Soviet Union. All qualified young men would be required to serve in one of the armed services, with the National Guard serving as the national force for all practical purposes. The proposal targets Congress to enact before current laws expire, and envisions automatic reinduction for those who fail to continue reserve service.
Two Council Bluffs women win top spots in Chicago preliminary contests for the Chicago Land Music Festival. Alice Riley and Virginia Moore advance toward semi finals at the Palmer House and the Soldiers Field finals, facing 50 to 75 other voices from Illinois and neighboring states.
The Weatherman forecasts sunny pleasant conditions Sunday in Southwest Iowa with a high near 88 and a low around 65 after a 83 high Saturday and a trace of precipitation.
