Celebration for Independence Day Plans at St. Marys
The St Marys church group organises a July 4 community celebration at the picnic grove near St Michael's Monastery three miles west of town. A 15 member committee will oversee events including speaking singing sports bowling shooting and refreshments with Cottonwood band music. Bishop Gor man will attend and speak along with Lt Gov Parker and Mayor Baker. Special invites go to Greencreek Ferdinand and Reuterville for the event.

Barn Dance at Schroeder Home Draws Big Local Crowd
Nearly 500 people enjoyed a barn dance last night at the Aug ust Schroeder home four miles east of town for Red Cross relief. The new 40 by 80 foot barn hosted 98 drafted boys bound for next Friday’s departure, with proceeds about 180 dollars after expenses. Music by the Cottonwood band.

Honoring Julius Holthaus Before Draft Departure
Forty of Julius Holthaus young friends held a rise party at his east town home four miles from town. The event celebrated his upcoming arrival at Camp Lewis next Friday morning as he enters the next army draft. The home was decorated with Stars and stripes, ferns, roses and carnations, with lawn games and BelCanto music. Refreshments were served as friends wished him success on his mission and safe return. News from France and Italy appeared encouraging, Italians said to have halted the Austrian drive and pushing toward Vienna. Bill Wagner sold his Oak land car to Bill Rogers.

Death of Joseph Arnzen in Cottonwood death notice
Joseph Arnzen died after a lingering illness with diabetes at his Cottonwood home. Burial followed at 10 o’clock Thursday at the Catholic church with Father Willibrord presiding and St. Joseph's society pallbearers. Born October 2, 1842 in Cincinnati, he married Catharine Doedtman November 10, 1868 in Greencreek. Ten children were born, nine living: Henry, John, Bernard, Lee, Frank, George Arnzen. Mrs. Mary Koester Effingham. Mrs. Catherine Tegenkamp Bruno Saskatchewan. Mrs. C W Nuxoll Cottonwood. The Arnzens moved from Illinois to Cottonwood years ago. He was a respected citizen. The widow and children thank friends for sympathy and aid.
