Fire swept Ferdinand on Wednesday morning, erasing Hotel Ferdinand and multiple nearby stores including the drug shop, Ferdinand Trading Co, and two hardware outlets. Losses total about 620,000 with 16 named properties and insurance figures, while residents moved goods away and crews from Cottonwood provided aid. The town lacks a formal fire department and calls for organized firefighting to prevent future losses.
The Grasshopper Post by Victor Jones extension entomologist outlines counties and communities to start anti grasshopper campaigns. Last year's outbreaks caused great crop damage in Adams Camas Idaho Lemhi Lewis and Valley counties. Lewis County’s poison program reduced grasshopper populations for the next spring. Jones, nicknamed Grasshopper Jones, led the county campaign.

Joe McDonald returned from Spokane Saturday after attending the Pacific Northwest Breeders Association sale where he bought a yearling Short horn bull for 300. The bull, from a noted strain, ships with six other cattle owned by Edwin Nelson, whose cows cost up to 625. Nelson plans to set a $2000 bull at the herd head.

Fire destroyed the residence and all contents of George Winder on Saturday evening around eight o clock. The home, recently sold to William Hanley, burned quickly with no possessions saved. Winder had left a heater burning, and the fire is believed to have started there. Loss estimated at about 500 dollars with no insurance.
State eighth grade examinations will be held April 6 7 and 8 at centers in Idaho counties including Grangeville Ferdinand Greencreek Clearwater Kooskia Kamiah Stites White Bird Riggins and Cottonwood Pupils in seventh and eighth grade recommended by teachers may write Examinations at Grangeville will be at the Court House Students must bring supplies and report at nine o clock each morning at the chosen center
Farm work in this section is getting under way as the recent three days of favorable weather have made the ground tillable. Many farmers have already begun field labor and expect continued progress in the coming days.
On May 5 1921 Idaho’s anti tobacco laws take effect after the sixteenth state legislative session. Senate bill No 134 barred cigarette importation but section 1 was repealed. section 2 becomes law 60 days after adjournment. Senate bill No 827 allows cigarette importation but requires annual licenses for tobacco dealers at 50 dollars plus 80 dollars for 1921, plus a 500 dollar bond. About 3000 dealers will be affected. some Cottonwood dealers plan to quit rather than pay fees. The margin on tobacco is small and licenses plus bonds may force many out of business. The annual school election is set for Monday April 18.
Governor Davis and Representative Smith of Idaho meet President Harding to press western reclamation and farm loan bank machinery. They seek postmaster selection input by patrons and caution civil service nominees about community standing. Postmaster General Hays promises no decision yet on post office reorganizations.
O D Hamlin of Continental Oil Co introduces a three compartment gasoline tank on his truck. Each 100 gallon compartment can carry gasoline coal oil and distillate together if needed. The unit eliminates handling gasoline in barrels and can be detached in a minute.
Mrs. Randell, now in Lewiston, will set up a temporary factory there after shipping ten cases of salad dressing to MacClintock Trunkey Co. in Spokane. She came from Lewiston Friday evening to supervise, with husband Mr Randall and two boys to join after the school year, making Lewiston their future home.
A Cottonwood meeting on March 28 organized a baseball club with officers elected and plans to buy land near the Frank Terhaar property for a permanent field. George Lange and N A Litherland will attend a Grangeville meeting to form a league. A follow up meeting is set for April 4 and Easter party details follow.
Joe Oldham closed a 275 acre farm sale to W H Weyen of London Idaho for 25000 dollars about seven years after purchasing the Asa Jones ranch. Weyen plans to move this fall after harvest while Oldham and family plan Lewiston as home. A public sale of personal property will be held April 7.
The Craig Mountain Lumber Co mill at Winchester reopened last week after a three month shutdown. No outside workers will be hired at this time. The region also reports a series of incidents including a school enforcement committee in Harrison Idaho, a destructive fire at Sommers Brothers Match Co. in Ian Michigan, and highway work along the Guile Elk City route set to begin mid April.
