Burrowing Owl Ends Up Living In Burrows Not Digs Them
The western burrowing owl, though named for burrows, favors abandoned holes of prairie dogs and ground squirrels. Endangered in Canada, Mexico, and Minnesota and Iowa, it is a species of special concern in six states including California. About 9 inches tall and up to 6 pounds, it has a rounded head, no ear tufts, white eyebrows, yellow eyes, and long legs. Its plumage is mottled brown and white. Active day and night especially at dawn and dusk, it preys on small rodents, reptiles, and insects, and is the only owl that lives in burrows among 171 owl species.
