GM Displacement on Demand promises cleaner power
GM will equip large GM trucks and SUVs with Displacement on Demand Vortec V-8 engines debuting in 2004. The system saves fuel by deactivating half the cylinders under normal driving, improving economy up to about 8 percent and reducing emissions. GM plans over 150,000 engines in year one, rising to 1.5 million by 2007, with emphasis on maintaining performance for heavy loads.
