Large timber lands in Heth township near the river burned for days last week. About a thousand acres were scorched damaging timber belonging to Ed Funkhouser David Byerly Wm Fisher Mrs Frank and others. Fencing and a building owned by Funkhouser were consumed and several barns and houses were saved with heroic effort. Loss runs to thousands of dollars as the fire was started by coon hunters one night.
The semi annual Sunday School convention comes to Corydon on November 9 and 10 with Supt. J. C. Carman of Indianapolis as lead speaker. Carman, renowned evangelist, filled the School Hall beyond capacity at the last gathering and is expected to draw a large crowd rain or shine. The event aims to boost Week of Sunday School work and home visitations. E. S. Hallett, Co. Pres.
Public notice states Prof H S Morris the eyesight specialist will visit Corydon for two days on Friday and Saturday November 8 and 9. All eye troubles including dimness of vision and headaches can be relieved at once with absolutely free testing and guaranteed satisfaction. Morris Hotel hosts tests. Prices are reasonable.
Mrs Mary Elizabeth Wright widow of Samuel J Wright died after a 16 week illness on October 25 1901 at age 69 years 5 months and 25 days. Born May 6 1832 in Harrison County Indiana she joined the Christian church in 1854 and raised seven children Charley Edgar Oscar Rose Riley Frank Fannie Huff and Mary. Funeral Friday from the Christian church with Elder S R Grubb preaching. The family carries a legacy of faith and service with floral tributes and burial beside her husband.
The funeral on Cedar Hill was well attended with many visitors from outside the county, reflecting a wide community turnout.
Ed D. Mitchell as guardian of Henry B Utz filed three suits in Harrison Circuit Court to set aside a 1892 deed transferring 700 acres near Portland cement deposits in Milltown to Thomas and Sally Spencer Willard Spencer and Louis Henry Spencer. Utz was then of unsound mind and guardian oversight is alleged.
The Jury Commissioners met in the Clerk's office last Monday to witness the drawing of the petit jury. An upstairs exhibit at the Savings and Loan building opposite the courthouse features paintings by William Forsythe of Indianapolis. It runs next Friday from 9 30 a m to 5 p m and 7 30 p m with 10 cent admission for adults and 5 cents for children under 12. Proceeds fund a high school painting, with a Women’s Club committee present to receive guests. Forsythe, nationally renowned, has been painting Corydon scenery and boards with George Luckett east of town.
A notice from Watson and Thomas promises a liberal reward for information leading to the capture of the person or persons who damaged and partially removed a large stack of lumber from their lumber yard on the Mrs Adda Shaffer land.
Mrs Julia Bullock of New Albany believed dead last week startled the undertaker when she supposedly died a second time George Shrader who had called to prepare her for burial died Tuesday at 10 o clock at her home She was eighty two and leaves one son David Bullock The remains were brought to this county and buried at Union Chapel on Thursday
Bertha Meyer, popular Lanesville marshal, died last Thursday at New Albany. Her husband, Eisert, recently appointed marshal, and Mrs. Eisert, a leading county teacher, are remembered by many friends as The Democrat extends condolences.
The Old Capital Poultry Association stages the second annual chicken exhibition December 2 to 7 in Corydon Indiana. The county wide event aims to boost poultry and egg industries, with experts judging entries and premiums available through secretary Henry W. Denbo or president El McKinster.
