Our correspondent reports on the need for public road improvements across the county. Walkem's store next door offers mineral water ice cream ice water and lemonade to beat the summer heat.
The fine new Christian church in this place was dedicated yesterday by Elder Bowe of Clark County. The sermon was able and well delivered. The large building was crowded to overflowing and all were pleased with the ceremony. It is now the nearest church edifice in Corydon.
Correspondent from New Amsterdam notes unusually promising crops and growing Democratic strength while Republicans decline. Washington township is expected to swing Democratic in the next general election in 1870.
Report indicates Joseph Cole attempted an assault on a woman named Ash near the Harrison county site in Crawford County last week. He was blocked before harm occurred and was remanded on bail set at $800. Cole had previously maintained a good character.
R H Heth and others presented a magnificent Bible to the Christian church pulpit last week. Dick, a helpful supporter, is praised for good deeds and living by the book’s teachings. The Bible was obtained from the Harrison County Bible Society at cost prices.
On May 28 1869 Rev J W Julian joined Strong Hugher and Heate Kintner in a Corydon ceremony. The note wishes the couple happiness and credits the printer in their joy. Also mentioned is a local sensational tale of a youth with multiple sets of teeth and dental work by Dr Wolfe.
Publisher offers two new pieces titled I wish I was a fish by G W Hunt priced 80 cents and Ifashionable Fred by J C Brown priced 30 cents. Music will be sent on receipt of price. John Church Jr 66 West Fourth Street Cincinnati Ohio authorizes sale.
Advert says Frank Madden of Louisville Ky offers monogrammed note paper porte monises elegant books and gold pens to order. If certain items are unavailable he will purchase and supply promptly, encouraging friends to patronize this deserving seller.
Knitting Van Dusen and Shaw operate an agency at New Albany for the Bieaford Knitting Machine and Howe’s Sowing Machine the original invention of whichage. They also handle labor-saving devices and boast the largest stock of dry goods and straw goods in New Albany with prices stated as cheap as the cheapest.
Miscellany items report routine town news from Corydonians including postmaster Barry Biggs, health concerns, crops and weather, a planned tailor shop by Mr Bush, a blacksmith Henry at his post, Sabbath school progress, a stable fire at Mr Funk’s farm with suspected arson, oats stolen from Mrs McRae, livestock poisonings near Buena Vista, new goods seen at Griffiths store, shingles shipped to New Albany, and clergy schedules for several churches.
In Bradford Morgan Township on May 25 a boy of Mr. Anderson Sears was shot in the thigh by Jonathan Trobridge after a dispute over a music book taken during singing near Palmyra. Trobridge, a married man living about three miles away, faces trial tomorrow before Esq. Bunch. The wound is serious but not deemed dangerous. The town notes nice weather and quiet life with little loafing and ongoing Sabbath school and singing activities.
A local note reports that the land assessment in Corydon township has been historically high but is now appraised at a more reasonable value. The town appraiser has made his returns, reflecting a shift in taxation fairness for residents.
A new store at Fourth Street offers everything for one dollar. The One Dollar Trade Palace draws crowds with a large, diverse stock from vases to jewelry and tableware, with attentive sales staff and daily hours, promising novelty and bargains.
Travelers and shoppers are directed to No 140 Market Street Louisville where Mr Andrews runs a vast dry goods emporium. The store boasts a large stock and astonishingly low prices with daily sales staff of fifteen to twenty assisting customers. Ladies will find splendid dress patterns and a full line of goods unmatched in the continent. The proprietor is courteous and enjoys doing business with patrons.
