President Dearing offers twelve scholarships at Oakland City College worth twelve dollars to top diploma exam graduates or six dollars cash if not taken. The editorial urges strong student leaders, maternal impact of home teaching, and teacher accountability including prompt report filing and careful reentry of ex-teachers into public schools.
January 5 witnessed the marriage of Joseph Ayres to Clara Belle Campbell at Beeton county area. Mr. and Mrs. Knoell improvements noted. Catherine Geswein recovering. A party at Amos Weaver home celebrated Florence Weaver's twelfth birthday with guests including Thomas, Green, Baxter, Mosier, Weaver, and Schellenberger.
Miss Alma Ayres dies after long illness at 19. The second oldest Ayres daughter, of J. W. Ayres, 2 miles east of town, funeral at Mt. Zion church in Floyd county. Theodore Emily, long invalid, passes at age 30 with family and friends grieving. funeral by Father Peckskamp in parish church and cemetery. Two-week-old Himmelheber infant buried in Duncomb with Father Peckskamp officiating. Mrs. Walter’s convalescent mother and Mrs. LaPlant return home from Taylor township care duties. Miss Lizzie Bachman visits Jeffersonville and Louisville relatives.
Helen Funk nine year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert Funk of Boone township died last Saturday of pneumonia after an illness of one week. The funeral was held at Camp Ground cemetery with a large crowd present and Rev Niles delivering a touching sermon. She leaves six brothers and many friends grieving her untimely loss.
Fragmentary notice records the birth of John B. Savedge in Dare County on August 8, 187? in a local enclave. No further details available.
A library meeting held at the Court House adopted a constitution establishing a Board of Control with nine members four officers and five lay directors. Officers are Harry Kepner President F O Jordan Vice President Wilbur Miller Secretary Dr John Botturff Treasurer. Other directors include C Wolfe J A Trotter Ben S Applegate Thomas S Jones and Miss Kate Luckett. Subscriptions urged with ten cents monthly for the year.
Elizabeth Plue travels to New Albany to stay. Jacob Rush remains critically ill for a week. Rev Niles conducts a revival at St Paul church. Otis LaDuke family from Louisville visit relatives. Miss Clara Lamb of Buena Vista visits family. Rebecca Plue returns to New Albany. Minnie Lemmel returns to New Albany due to neice Minnie Winders illness. Oscar Shaney departs for Jeffersonville. Lou Shireman of New Albany visits Flanagan family. Dottie Weaver hosts M E Church Ladies Aid on New Year’s Day.
The Baraca class hosted a successful box supper and social Friday evening in the church basement. Miss Clara Bennett won best lady talker, Mr Dow Mc Grain won last gentleman talker, and Miss Getzendanner was named most handsome young lady. Refreshments were served.
Samuel Allen, son of J. K. Allen, 15, collapsed last Friday at school in Spencer township while throwing a snowball. He had a known history of heart weakness. Funeral services were held at Mt. Lebanon last Sunday.
Wiseman H P Wiseman and G A Bulleit have bought the Joseph Bender implement business and will operate as Wiseman and Bulleit with Mr Wiseman in management and Guy Bullett heading the sales department They pledge to maintain their high standards and supply goods meeting farmers needs, leveraging long standing contracts with leading manufacturers.
Valentine Seipel died at his Webster township home last Monday night after a two week illness from kidney trouble. He was 72 years and 7 months old. Funeral services will be held today at 10 A M at St Michael's church cemetery with Rev E L Juade officiating. He leaves five children John Paul Andrew Seipel and Mrs Albert Benson and Mrs Kate Fein. All live in the county except Andrew and Mrs Fein who reside in Louisville. Born in Germany he came to the U S as a boy and settled in this county after exploring the West. He was a good farmer and a respected citizen.
Laura R Felts and Jesse T Pfrimmer united in marriage at the bride's home on High street. Rev B S LaRue conducted the ceremony in the presence of close relatives. Afterward, refreshments and well wishes followed. They plan to visit relatives for two weeks then reside in Crescent Oklahoma. Both are well regarded. Pfrimmer formerly lived in this county. This marriage marks the third adventure for the groom.
State Superintendent Cotton announces the semi annual apportionment totaling 1,424,190 dollars for the state. There are 764,660 school age children, yielding 1.69 dollars per child. Harrison county has 6,509 children aged 6 to 21 and will receive 10,955.21 dollars. Apportionments are made each year.
Emma Lagle and Lee Davidson wed at the Lagle home near Milltown. Davidson, a government employee with the Post Office in the Philippines, returns from leave and will sail for Manila by February end. They plan to be at home in Manila after March 31 and will spend two years abroad.
Ramsey. Mrs Neddie Zenor is on the sick list. Mr. Al Housel was at Corydon Wednesday. Mr. Floyd Davis took a trip to Chicago last week. Miss Lorena Beal went to the Falls Cities last Friday. Dr. R. R. Sigler made a business trip to Corydon last week. Mr. Robert Swarens traveled to Depauw Monday on business. Mr. M. A. Rowe visited relatives here Tuesday and Wednesday. Miss Audra Davis visited Corydon friends Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. Annie Shumate and Miss Susie Weekly visited relatives here. Rev Frederick Reimers, studying at Ohio, has been visiting friends here.
The M E quarterly meeting is set for Wood's Chapel on January 23 and 24. Local youths have been going to Thompson's Chapel for services. Celestia Loudon returns to West Baden after a week here. Will Vausha and daughters Catherine and Georgia Lea of New Albany visited Eph Engleman and family.
Mrs Sarah Miller wife of George M Miller died at home in Franklin township last Monday night from consumption aged 60. Interment will be in West graveyard today with Logan Alexander preaching the funeral sermon. She leaves a husband two sons and two daughters all grown. A longtime Methodist member she was highly esteemed and lived a Christian life.

Donn C Carter and Joe McNaughty were mentioned in local remarks with a horse incident. John Etherage of Louisville visited Bridgeport on Sunday. A new birth was recorded for Joe Saidback. Mrs Ning Bowman visited relatives Sunday. Captain Villier rural carrier is listed as sick. Silas Babcock moved from the heights to the Sugar Grove river bottom. Essie McCrae of Denver is visiting her aunt Mrs Thomas Farnsley.
Miss Mary C Pitman died at her sister's home four miles south of town after nine weeks illness. Funeral services were held at Shilo church Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. A. B. Condo of Corydon, and burial followed in the Jordan cemetery. She was highly esteemed with many friends.
A revival uniting the Methodist and Presbyterian churches will open at the M E church next Sunday evening with Dr A M Irvine delivering the first sermon. Rev Edgin of Martinsville will arrive next Tuesday to assist in the meeting which is described as a strong effort for good.
