A fragmented editorial piece laments trusts expanding power and the threat to individual rights, mocks Grannie Self and editor conduct, questions tariffs and the gold standard, and rails against political parties. It cites grand juries, the 1890s budget debates, and wartime issues in a combative, period voice.
A clipping purports Grannie W Self defends herself against claims she condemns the county poor farm deal. The piece mocks her defense, challenges more utterances, and accuses her of lying in a county controversy over the new poor farm purchase.
After Commissioner Alexander resigns, Gleitz and Fein ballot to fill the vacancy. Amos W. Yeager of Heth township wins the post by Auditor Watson's casting vote. A prosperous farmer with a river bottom farm and over one hundred dollars yearly taxes, Yeager is the county’s likely first young commissioner. His first act recalls the setting of the contract for a poor asylum until a definite site is agreed upon.
The Corydon Republican defends Getzendanner as a Republican and condemns political deceit. The piece rails against omissions as lies, while noting a domestic quarrel with Grannie Self over a cellar door slide.
Nine tenths of life’s necessaries are controlled by combinations that fix prices and force the public to pay. Justice seems powerless while rapacious trusts dictate terms. Open competition should prevail and law should reach these modern combine rulers.
A historical Wire-voice reflects frustration over Filipino resistance in Luzon during the war. The writer criticizes Filipino tactics that breach lines, causing heavy casualties on both sides and questions the purpose of continued fighting. A personal aside mentions Grannie’s digestion.
The Evansville Democrats celebrate Wm. M. Akin Jr. winning the mayoralty last Monday, with Republicans losing by 1200 last fall and Democrats averaging about 200 this week. One council seat of eleven was won, and county salary changes now in force reduce county costs. Big gains are noted in Michigan and Ohio cities, while local officials push to trim the proposed poor asylum project to cut costs.
Hollow cheeks sunken eyes and a sallow parsnip complexion indicate kidney trouble. The ad warns on symptoms and risks, promotes Dr Kilmer's Swamp Root as a remedy, and offers a free sample bottle and book by mail. It also notes a Post Office weight mandate starting March 2 for rail freight cost study.
Henry Montgomery is appointed administrator of Leanor Montgomery's estate in Harrison county Indiana. The estate is solvent. Dated April 3 1899.
