U S Offensive In Pacific Stepped Up

American air and naval forces intensified operations across the Pacific. Attacks near Tonolei Harbor on September 25 destroyed six seaplanes and damaged a seventh, hit eight cruisers, and likely sank a transport near Shetland Island on September 26. The next day four bombers and five fighters from an attacking Japanese squadron over Guadalcanal were blasted. Day by day the U S forces intercepted and destroyed Japanese bombers and fighters while Marines tightened Guadalcanal positions with dive-bombing support. Northward, Canadian-augmented air crews raided Aleutian footholds, sinking seven enemy planes and damaging a transport. Inland, Kiska suffered strafing and a low-level attack that left about 150 Japanese dead or wounded. Army bombers and Royal Canadian Air Force ships resumed heavy strikes on September 24 and 25, hitting two cargo ships in harbor and beaching one. The overall tally shows continued Japanese shipping losses as U S forces push operations forward.
