Tokyo reports at least 2,618 dead or missing with 927,708 homes lost after a ferocious weekend typhoon. Rescue crews comb mud for bodies as rice prices rise and crops suffer. witnesses describe widespread flooding and damaged towns from Nagashima to Handa.
President Eisenhower said Khrushchev’s assurances reduced the Berlin threat and opened conditions for a Summit. He noted the talks at Camp David from Friday night to Sunday afternoon and the two leaders agreed on the abnormal Berlin situation. Khrushchev said he would raise the Americans jailed in China with Chinese leaders, though they found their views largely opposed.
NASA announced Explorer VI sent the first crude picture of Earth and its cloud cover from space. The image from 17 000 miles out captured a crescent of the sunlit planet photographed Aug 14 near Mexico. The two pound camera was built by Space Technology Laboratories Inc Telewood Calif.
Gov Lawrence and Senate President Pro Tem Taylor face a fight over the 1959-61 budget. Lawrence blasts 58 million in cuts as budget fakery while Taylor defends the GOP’s stance. Republicans plan to push the measures in the week ahead amid a 28-22 edge. Democrats vow to contest in conference.
Two more deaths raise the toll to eleven from encephalitis in South Jersey. A 10 year old boy from Manahawkin and a 77 year old man from New Gretna died, as hospitals report additional suspected cases and an official response by the U S Public Health Service.
A hearing is set for 3 pm today for Juan R. Perry Dennis F. Ruggles and David Little three Meadville men all 20 from Corry awaiting charges of aggravated assault and battery and malicious mischief arising from a September 14 racial incident near Waterford where four Negroes were attacked after a quarrel in a restaurant. They were released on $2000 bond after pleading not guilty. The assault occurred as the men forced a car to stop and beat the occupants police said.
Edgar S. Turington, 67, long time adviser on international law and 24 year State Department veteran, died yesterday from a heart attack in Washington.
A Pittsburgh man, John G. Jones, 63, died from chest injuries after a two car crash on Route 98 near Littles Corners in Hayfield Township. He died at Spencer Hospital about 8:30 p m on Saturday. Jones was one of four Pittsburgh men and five county residents injured. State Police investigation continues as removal to a Pittsburgh funeral home occurred today.
Fire officials blamed inadequate wiring for a Saturday blaze at the Huff home on Stewart road. Corry and nearby fire units fought the flames in 6 mph winds, saving little furniture as the rear and upper floor burned. The loss was put at 5 000 dollars. four Corry firefighters were slightly injured.
Khrushchev returns from a two week United States tour described as history making and world calming. His TU114 landed at 1 28 p m Moscow time with broad greetings from all walks of life and representatives of diplomatic missions including the U S embassy staff. He plans to visit Peiping for the People’s Republic anniversary and discuss his talks with President Eisenhower.
Corry Red Cross and Salvation Army volunteers aided the Huff family of seven after a Saturday night blaze left them with few belongings. They sheltered at first in a hotel, then an apartment, but still need two double beds a single bed and clothing. First Lady Mamie Eisenhower greeted Nina Khrushchev during a Moscow visit with the Khrushchev party.
Editor Saul Pett reports Khrushchev’s U.S. visit where he suggested no clear difference between the U.S. government and people in their desire for peace. He noted the American economy could shift to a peaceful model without disaster and commented that the American worker’s condition is not a bad one, contrasting Moscow propaganda.

A North Clymer man, 42, John C. Roberson, was treated at Corry Memorial Hospital after a one car crash near Clymer. Passenger Javold J. Chamberlin, 28, Sherman, suffered injuries with lacerations and facial abrasions when the vehicle skidded on a gravel road and rolled onto its side. Deputy Chester Burroughs noted the driver was uninjured.
The Air Force predicted Discoverer V, a 1,600 pound American satellite, will reenter and burn up before Wednesday after about a month and a half in orbit.
AP reports Scheffing resigned as Chicago Cubs manager. President Phil Wrigley announced Charley Grimm would succeed him in 1960 and that Scheffing accepted a position in the baseball department. Wrigley praised Grimm as an experienced major league manager with a strong track record.
