Rail workers plan nationwide walkout next month

Associated Press reports that a planned nationwide strike by railway firemen and enginemen is set for next month to protest the rejection of a union demand for an extra fireman on Diesel engines. David B. Robertson, president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, says the action will press for safety measures despite an emergency board ruling. The board found Diesels offer greater safety and that the extra man is unnecessary. The union plans a Chicago meeting October 7 to decide on a strike against all class one railroads.
