Shortage of Elementary Rural Teachers Warned In Pennsylvania

A definite shortage has developed in elementary grade teachers and rural schools in Pennsylvania. Edinboro State Teachers College reports an average of five weekly requests for teachers, but supply from Edinboro graduates is exhausted. Vacancies extend beyond state lines, with districts turning to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia trained teachers. While elementary is strained, secondary teacher supply remains ample though decreasing, with over 28 percent more Edinboro graduates placed in secondary roles than state average. Potential shifts in industry or military service could trigger broader shortages in art and other subjects.
