Legion Begins Fight for Bonus
The American Legion and eight veterans groups form a council to campaign for a Pennsylvania statewide referendum on a 500 dollar maximum WWI veteran bonus. Opponents led by Morten Smolen warn no financing plan exists and new taxes may follow. The measure, approved by the 1947 and 1949 legislatures, would grant 15 per overseas month and 10 per month in the U.S. to about 1.3 million veterans if approved.
