Fire Rips Through Syracuses Phoenicia District in 1900s Blaze
A massive early 20th century fire devastated a New York village area destroying 22 buildings and major mills including Sweet Brothers paper mill and Phoenix National Bank Building. The blaze lasted about 16 hours aided by a failed water supply and forced residents to improvise for food. Firefighters and volunteers saved parts of residential districts while notable figures such as Thaddeus C. Sweet and his brother Kirk M. Sweet owned affected mills. One man Jamon Goodwin perished in the disaster.
