In a three state reversal a wildcat strike ended with three West Virginia Christopher Coal Co. mines resuming operations including Arkwright Osage and Pursgrove mines in Morgantown area as roving pickets had shut more than twenty mines idling about 11 000 workers while Humphrey mine remained idle.

James Eugene Szulczewski, 23, escaped Lancaster County prison using a hacksaw and a rope made from mattress covers. He climbed to a skylight, descended through a drain pipe, crossed the yard, and used an electric cord to lower himself outside, triggering a wide road check and protective custody for Judge Johns. Szulczewski, convicted for shooting two state troopers, fled with Milwaukee accomplices who disarmed officers and were later sentenced.
Bishop Francis J. Tiel, 34, who led the Salina Kansas diocese from 1921 until semi retirement in 1938, died Wednesday in Denville New Jersey. He served as a Roman Catholic bishop before withdrawing to retirement.
In Detroit a mother, Lucy B. Andrews, 37, filed a federal suit seeking an injunction to prevent interference with her son Bruce, 14, being promoted to ninth grade after failing English, mathematics, civics and woodworking. She alleges arbitrary decisions and lack of cooperation from teachers and counselors, and cites equal protection under the 14th Amendment. A hearing was set for the following Monday before U S District Judge Theodore Lynn.
