Leonard L. Hoffman, 20, of a yournmmeryourg Pa, risked his life to shield school children as his coal truck brakes failed on Route 97 north of Waterford. He steered into a ditch to avoid a catastrophe, becoming trapped for nearly two hours before rescue. He survived with a bruised ankle.

Farmington Utah AAP investigators face sympathetic resistance as a Davis County grand jury continues efforts to stamp out polygamy. Foreman Henri Pred eriksen says many polygamists have fled the county since the inquiry began, and some witnesses refuse or defy subpoenas. One indictment exists for unlawfully cohabiting Gerard Van Hoff who has left the area. The jury plans to report on unhealthy conditions found among polygamous families while noting church past sanctions and the 1896 Utah ban.
The United Fund of Corry launched its drive for advance gifts with a letter signed by advance gifts chairman George Orcutt. It notes rising costs affect 33 agencies and local recipients and asks for increased giving to offset these costs. The message says 75 percent of funds stay in Corry.
