Margiotti details truck buy and kickback pressure
Former Attorney General Charles J. Margiotti testified before the legislative investigating committee that in the 1937 end of session a cabinet colleague Arthur Colegrove warned of “terrible things” and risk of jail over truck purchases for the state highways department. He described pressure from Democratic leaders McCloskey and Lawrence to obtain a $50,000 campaign contribution, with trucks bought on a staggered schedule to hide the inflated costs.
