Surveyor 2 Mission Faces Battery Drain and Moon Impact

The Surveyor 2 spacecraft endured sustained spin from extra rocket firings which prevented solar panel locking and drained its battery. Officials stated there was no chance the battery would last to reach the moon, so the team aimed to maximize remaining data before craft failed. Despite power loss, the craft remained on course and was expected to crash near its lunar target around 11:42 p.m. EDT, though timing could shift due to retro rocket activity. Launched Tuesday from Cape Kennedy in what scientists deemed ideal conditions, the 63 hour flight to the moon was nearly on track, with a precise trajectory that would have only needed a minor midcourse correction.
