The first public novena at St Thomas Catholic Church begins tonight at 7 30 with devotions in honor of St Therese of the Little Flower. A sermon by Fr J Graves will close with benediction. Nine days of devotions end on Sept 8 with a Carmelite blessing and shrine dedication. The statue was donated by Mrs Sadie Crowe Moward of Jamestown, formerly Corry.
The Masbaie Royal Arch chapters of Lerié and Crawford counties hold a district meeting at the Masonic Temple on North Center Street. The event draws hundreds of fraternity members from both counties as several degrees are exemplified before grand officers including Walter Swotland, August Kernitin, and Thomas Ni Me Key among others.

Harrisburg September 21 United Press reports Senator Clarence J Buckman urged the State Board of Pardons to standardize liquor law violator sentences. He cited Cumberland County prisoner Vecchione who got 1000 dollar fine and 17 months for illegal possession. Board members warned of the scope of such reform.
Reports say a recount of the West Ward constable race may be filed amid alleged ballot irregularities in two precincts. Independent candidate P.O. Miller, defeated, is said to be ready to petition the courts for a recount. Miss Alice McLaghma visited Pittsford this afternoon, hosted by Mr and Mrs John Clough.
Mrs Maria Phompman Parker of Maple avenue has been diagnosed as a suspected typhoid fever case, with her husband Mr Parker, a Junior High faculty member, reported in stable condition. Friends wish for her speedy recovery.
Hyannetine Booth National Commander of the Salvation Army addressed the Legion convention in Parts Anterieats praised the Army’s postwar social work. Red Cross official William Fortune announced 400 million dollars spent on wartime relief and 50 million for veterans. Knights of Columbus leader Dr J Callaghan cited 450 thousand dollars in wartime support benefiting 16 thousand soldiers. Mrs. Walter Davol of Providence was elected Chapeau National of the Eight and Forty welfare order, with new vice presidents named from San Francisco Oak Park Illinois and other locations.
A small attractive woman with keen eyes and a mild manner has become queen of federal prohibition forces. Mrs. Mable Walker Willebrandt, assistant US attorney general, directs and dominates portions of the dry program. From obscurity as a schoolteacher she rose to power, becoming the government’s chief prosecutor in liquor law violations and a key liaison with the Treasury on enforcement.
The House of David filed its answer to Michigan’s suit seeking dissolution of the religious colony. The 186 page brief denies immorality and fraud and calls the state’s allegations a “blanket denial” of a conspiracy by 16 farmer girl members. The group labels critics as “character assassins” and accuses authorities of aligning with a blackest and vilest conspiracy.
The Community Chest faces slow progress as committees lag in fundraising. Chairman F. Brown reports 8815.85 dollars pledged so far with 75 of 115 pledges paid, urging all districts to intensify work to reach a 13 500 dollar goal. Ethel Matthews travels to Erie for a few days with friends.
Eadie Stinson, famed aviator from New York City to Detroit, landed near Lovells Station after a nonstop race diversion. He spent a night at Hotel Oray and continued to Detroit, widely recognized as one of the nation’s best known aviators.
The New York to Spokane nonstop air race begins this afternoon with Eddie Stinson flying his orange monoplane at 3:01 p.m. from Roosevelt Field. Duke Schiller follows in the Royal Windsor, taking off at 3:15 p.m. after a 780 foot runway start. About a thousand spectators watched the start as the pilots aimed to conquer the cross continental route.
Beaverdam dispatch reports John Wise, a former Canton police chief and accomplice John Reiter, a Canton businessman, were killed when their car overturned en route to attend the Dempsey Tanney event. The incident follows the murder of Don RK Mellett and marks a violent turn in local crime history.
