Pittsburgh reports the Allegheny County Health Department credits major progress in controlling infectious syphilis while noting gonorrhea cases rose 10 percent in the first eight months of 1972. Dr. Virginia Washburn cites 2,163 gonorrhea cases by August versus 1,967 last year and estimates underreporting could push total to over 8,000. Only about 25 infectious syphilis cases were reported by August, down from 42 in 1971, highlighting the county as one of the few urban areas with declining syphilis.
