In Little Rock a TV station airs an educational program for students from closed high schools while white pupils demand regular classes even on an integrated basis. Gov. Faubus ordered closures to block seven Negroes from Central High, with more than 200 students transferring from Central Hall Tech, Horace Mann remains the only Negro school unaffected. Hall High students seek reopening as a public school, sending resolutions to Faubus and federal officials. Faubus, en route to a governors conference, downplayed the impact and refused to comment on private reopens or Horace Mann’s integration plans. He asked the school board to hand four schools to a private firm, which the board did not respond to.
A car and a tractor-trailer collided on Route 62 near a northwestern Pennsylvania community. John Damond, 26, from Jamestown, died on arrival at WCA Hospital. A Jamestown passenger, Norval Seagrat, 26, was treated and admitted in fair condition. The truck driver, Marshal Lafave, 42, of Eden, was not injured. Police did not determine who drove the auto.
The First Methodist Church plans a campaign to raise 110000 for a new educational building, moving and electrifying the organ, and joining structures. Lester Danner chairs the drive. Rev George A Myers notes solicitation begins the week of October Std. Dr Moorman Parker will assist in organizing the effort in Corry. The church traces its roots to 1830s with current records showing 068 members.
York County Coroner A. Leslie Jr. reports six year old James Lester Keener died when his father wired three live 110 volt wires across his bed to stop bed wetting. His sister Betty Jean slept uninjured as the boy rolled over and touched the live wire. The device, similar to marketed low voltage deterrents, had been used previously by the father W. J. Keener.
Morocco and Tunisia recognize the Algerian rebel government, placing diplomatic strain on France. De Gaulle cuts ties with both nations, limiting potential peace intermediaries. Corry corporal William Irwin will be promoted to sergeant by the state police. Col. B J Henry announced the move, noting Irwin has served over 20 years and has acted as officer in charge at the Corry barracks for weeks. The promotion becomes effective next Thursday.
UAW prepared to authorize strikes against General Motors and Chrysler but hopes for settlement without walkouts. Walter P. Reuther led talks with Chrysler, signaling possible agreement by Monday if serious bargaining occurs. He set a Tuesday deadline for GM, noting its larger plant base and unresolved grievances. He rejected copying Ford terms and would return to Chrysler if they wish to bargain.
Corryite, 20, of Spring Street, received a five year term in Huntaville State Penitentiary after pleading guilty to assault with intent to kill. Representatives from Greyhound and Warren Lines attended, with plans for interstate rights and fleet expansion pending approval.
A Union City youth escaped serious injury after his car missed an intersection near West Columbus Avenue and rolled over an embankment west of Corry around 2 a.m. Keith Howley identified by state police as the driver, likely unaware of the intersection when entering from a dirt road. The 1948 vehicle sustained about $200 damage. Howley reported no injuries.
