Government orders curb installment purchases and target inflation and material conservation. Businessmen face new limits as officials seek to slow credit growth and ration scarce supplies while maintaining essential consumer access.
Washington announces stop orders on over easy consumer credit and eager business buying to curb inflation and conserve defense materials. The Commerce Department limits lumber copper and other key items, with penalties up to a year in prison and $6,000 fine. Installment terms tighten for autos appliances and furniture, with exemptions for items under $100.
Alfred Dean Slack, a 44 year old Syracuse chemist, pleaded guilty in Federal court to wartime spying for Russia. Assistant Atty. James M. Meek urged a 10 year prison term after Slack admitted passing explosive RDX secrets to Russian agents. The government indicated agreement with the 10 year sentence based on Slack's delayed cooperation and resistance to information.
After several rainy days the city saw a sharp temperature drop from a high near freezing. The damp gloomy weather kept homes fire safe but hindered outdoor farming with late growing season crops and gardens partially flooded by last night’s frost threatening some vegetables.
Two weekend crashes left three people injured, none seriously, per State Police. Helen McDonnell and Katherine McDonnell of Erie in the first crash near Oak Hill and Union City suffered major damage to their car. estimated losses around 1,600. A second collision near the same area involved Walter Grove of Erie and Russell Weiss of Union City. Grove’s 1998 Packard valued at 250 and Weiss’s 1937 Packard at 150 in damage.
The Navy says the 45000 ton battleship New Jersey is being de mothballed for return to active fleet. It will be the second battleship in operation, with sister Missouri already headed for duty in the Far East. Two other 45000 ton battleships, Wisconsin and Town of San Francisco, remain in reserve. Demothballing started at Brooklyn Navy Yard after New Jersey was stored there following commissioning in May 1943. Both New Jersey and Wisconsin were withdrawn from the active fleet in December 1947.
Harrisburg reports that about 45 000 state employees in Pennsylvania will get a 200 cost of living salary increase totaling 9 000 000 as Gov. Duff orders the boost for those earning under 3000 a year. Higher earners gain via merit. Additionally Ray Smock of State Highways announces a 10 cent an hour COLA for 15 000 hourly maintenance workers.
Lewis Whiteoff was arrested by city police on two traffic charges after a wreck on East South Street. Jean Gates was injured. both were taken to Corry Hospital. White drove the car owned by Charles Zens, failed to negotiate a turn, and hit a tree in front of the Bills Animation home. Damages to lawn and tree estimated at 825. Both injured party members were discharged after emergency treatment.
The AFL opened its 69th convention in Houston with a call to expel all Communists and to prepare for wartime like mobilization. William Green, in his 26th year as president, was to speak at 10 a.m. The council reported 443,003 members as of August, down from 9 years earlier, with a projected 1,000,000 new members set at 448-50. The council urged prioritizing production manpower and called for a Communist ban on equal civic rights. Wage increases were anticipated this fall to match rising living costs and production.
Thirteen Corry Area draftees left for Erie this morning to report to an Army Induction center. Each received a shoeshine kit and clothing repair items from the Salvation Army, funded by the Corry Servicemen's Fund. They were delayed by a train wreck but then transported to Erie by bus. Lt Merlin of the Salvation Army briefed them and read Psalm 46 beforehand.
Burglars gained entry through a window at the Fair Store near Garry Jolie station and stole $15 from the cash register. Sal Cohen discovered the break in at 8:30 Saturday or Sunday, with police noting the thieves likely used a ladder to access a shed roof and a wooden cover to reach the window. Chief Harley Drake said the cash register remained intact and the window was away from doors.
A Saturday fire damaged a two story house near Spartansburg resulting in 2600 to 2900 dollars in losses. Fireman Lee Stambroy was slightly injured and treated at Corry Hospital. The blaze started while residents were at the Spartansburg Fair with cause unknown and firefighting efforts delayed by water pumping problems.
The Associated Press reports government officials unveiled a comprehensive civilian defense plan detailing preattack precautions and postattack aid for about 140 target areas nationwide. It calls for a new federal civil defense administration and mutual aid pacts among states, with involvement from local governments and mayors representing tens of millions of people as the plan evolves.
A new commander has been appointed for Company A of the 14th Infantry Regiment replacing Captain Raymond Carlisch who left with the unit. Captain Anthony P. Stanoplewle assumed command as part of broad changes across 20 companies in Erie and northwestern Pennsylvania. Lt. Adam Drievelbies stated the moves aim to consolidate commands and adjust ranks.
Congress pledges to act on excess war profits this year or early next, with retroactive levy possible. Conference panel resolved differences on the general tax bill, aiming for quick approval in time for October levies on over 50 million taxpayers. A Corry boy was struck by a car near his home at about 5 20 pm yesterday and suffered a broken leg. He was taken to Currey Hospital for treatment as authorities investigated the collision involving driver 7G VanDresir and the East South street area.
The 28th Division starts a long training period at Camp Atterbury Indiana aiming to prepare troops for combat after a week of housekeeping. Major General Daniel B Sheikler praised the soldiers for their efforts as the division readies for a strenuous six week program.

The two foot Hauer Gurywe atomic exhibit scheduled for Hine was stalled in Niagara Falls yesterday and could not arrive as planned. Commander Houghton of the Dr Archie W Thompson Post VFW said the exhibit could not be checked through and that arrangements were to be made later for a new date, to be announced in tomorrow's Journal.
