Reports from the hundred mile battle line in the third rest battle describe Servians and Montenegrins advancing and repelling Austrian defenders near Sarajevo. Berlin confirms ongoing battles with ferocity and limited German gains while Vienna Rome and Warsaw relay conflicting accounts of Russian and Austro-German movements in the eastern front.
United Press dispatches from London Rome and Vienna report an unsuccessful early morning attempt to assassinate Count Bobringk the Russian military governor amid broader fighting in Galicia and Bosnia. Meanwhile Austrian forces suffer losses as Russians gain prisoners and Serbia absorbs troop movements with strategic shifts. President Wilson remains cautious on mediation while Washington notes Allied and German positions ahead of peace talks.
A fast passenger train No. 2 on the Alabama and Great Southern Railway derailed at Livingstone, Alabama, after striking a broken rail at three o'clock this morning. Several dead and about twenty injured, many seriously, with reports of higher death tolls. Rescue trains with doctors and nurses dispatched from nearby stations.
Final City League contest for the DeRosay Cup scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at City League Park. The Kurte and High School teams seek the league title in a decisive showdown, with potential lineup losses offset by fan interest and anticipated crowd turnout. Arrangements are in place for additional big games featuring well known visiting teams from other cities.
The jury in Crawford County acquits D. C. Rive, a well known county general store keeper, of hogaling liquor with the costs borne by the county. Over sixty witnesses testified before Judge Prather, with Kincaid of Wheelty representing the defendant.
The Canadian government steamer Montmagny was sunk in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence after a collision with the Lingman coating vessel about 26 miles from Quebec. Captain Pollot and twelve crew members are missing and believed dead. The Montmagny carried coal and supplies to the wireless station at Halle Isle.
Republican committee members from Corry plan to attend the courthouse gathering. Attorney A C Chapin of Erie is tipped to succeed LeVant Davis as county chairman while the local group expects little real contest. Weather warned of unsettled conditions could affect the meeting.
Curlew Keating of this city County Sealer of Weights and Measures was honored yesterday by selection as an officer of the state association of sealers in his first convention. He was named Sergeant At Arms with other officers including President Harry A Boyer Dauphin vice president W Jansen Scranton secretary James Sweeney chief of standards treasurer J B Herhey Allegheny City Sealer Joseph Gordon of Erie was placed on the legislative committee. Keating arrived home this morning and Sealer Gordon of Erie also spent time in the city today.
