Six Union Chiefs Suspended Over Welfare Fund Probe
Six top officers of the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union are suspended after state investigators testified to misuse of welfare funds for high salaries and lavish perks. CIO President Walter P. Reuther ordered remedial action and auditors were appointed to review five locals. Washington committees prepared to probe union welfare fund abuses with pledge of cooperation from Reuther and AFL President Meany.

Trucker Escapes Jail Sentence in Hit and Run Case
Donald L. Shields pleaded guilty to hit and run driving and resisting arrest after a 30 mile chase from Route 5 near Port Erie Airport to Painesville Ohio. Judge Samuel Rossiter gave two years probation and a $200 fine. Shield’s attorney blamed officers for rough pursuit and claimed he fled after shots were fired.
