John C. Bertges of the Pennsylvania Gas Association warned at a State House hearing that eliminating the fuel cost adjustment could trigger a financial disaster for Pennsylvania gas utilities and raise consumer prices. He cited a potential $33 million first year revenue drop for the 10 largest providers and argued pipelines set prices beyond utility control.
Bert Lance testified that his conduct as banker and as budget director met ethical standards set by President Carter. He said overdrafts in Calhoun, Georgia were not unethical, insisted that he disclosed all information to committee staff, and claimed he had done more than stay within the law. Carter postponed judgment pending hearing results.
Sparta area man George Sherlock, 37, of Spartansburg, is in fair condition at Corry Memorial Hospital after a one car crash on Route 426 three miles west of Pittsfield. Police say his car left the road on a curve, traveled 280 feet on the berm, crossed back, hit guardrails, plunged down an embankment, and lodged on railroad tracks before being rushed to hospital.
Reflects a dispute over traveling teachers in Corry elementary schools as Thomas Davis realigned art music physical education and library posts to equalize loads. Esther Allen of Spartansburg objects to the revised schedule arguing it creates inequities by shifting her duties between elementary and high schools.
