Pennsylvania farm column reports mixed grain prospects
Harrisburg reports favorable conditions for winter grains and plowing after wet muggy weather in August. Corn shows uneven growth with yellowing, oats and barley yields disappointing, beans promising, potatoes good early but diminished by blight and weeds, tobacco affected by rust and earlier cutting, hay and pastures excellent, fruit clean and well sized. Wheat production expected to fall to the lowest since 1954, with total yield projected at 15,486,000 bushels vs 16,714,000 last year and a 10 year average of 19,229,000.

Smethport St Luke's Episcopal marks 50th consecration
Smethport Pennsylvania observances at St Luke's Episcopal Church commemorate the 50th anniversary of the church's consecration. The first congregation formed in 1879, with two pastors serving to date, Rev J H McCandless from 1880 to 1909 and the current rector Very Rev W E VanDyke leading the ceremonies led by Bishop John C Ward. The day included religious services and a luncheon for visiting clergy and officials. The note adds a curiosity about cuckoos eating fuzzy caterpillars, furlining their stomachs with holes.
