Hope September tax collections meet big share
Faved with some $30,000 in loans negotiated with the National Bank and Trust Company of the last Spring to meet a deficit in its B6 operating revenue, the Board of Education has another perplexing financial problem before it. Notes come due around October 1. While it is hoped that a goodly share of the loans from the ice bank can be met through the payment of 1996 taxes before the five per cent penalty date of October 1, extension of a portion of the notes is inevitable if the district is to have any balance to meet current operations. Charles B. Monroe, chairman of the finance committee, informed the board that retirement of the notes hinges on the district receiving additional state aid on the reduced valuations. Supt. Dewey reported that additional allocations would not be forthcoming until the next fiscal year, at the earliest. Approximately $13,000 more state aid is anticipated under the revised valuations and board members feel final in about two years the loans could be paid off. Hope being held that it would be necessary to issue bonds to cover the indebtedness. Chairman Monroe and other members conferred with A. G. Postlethwaite, president of the Erie bank, a few days ago, expressing confidence the institution would go along on any reasonable arrangement if the board continued to show faith and a sincere effort to retire the loans as rapidly as financial conditions permit. The board, at a special meeting earlier in the month, will likely give the proper officers power to negotiate any loan extension, new notes or other financial arrangement as may be found necessary in tiding the district over the low in spirits period.
