Meyers To Head Pa. Retardation Field

Harrisburg reports the state likely to appoint Stanley Meyers 47, an official of the National Association for Retarded Children, to head Pennsylvania’s mental retardation program. Meyers would start Oct 1 with the Office of Mental Retardation at a salary above $30,000. He has led programs in New York City and Connecticut, and has served since 1971 as a regional NARC representative for 11 states. The appointment follows reforms moving the office under the welfare secretary and away from civil service constraints for a commissioner post, aiming for greater visibility and policy clout. The post has been vacant since July after Ed Goldman resigned amid controversy at Polk State School and Hospital, and the secretary has since fired its superintendent over abuse findings. Wohlgemuth advocates community living and work for the retarded.
