Weaver Sides With Barry On Test Ban
Representative James D. Weaver voiced support for the nuclear test ban treaty now before the Senate while listing faults he sees in the agreement. He said it could curb U S testing but allows underground tests by Russia and blocks atmospheric tests where the United States might have an edge. He supported Senator Barry Goldwaters ratification plan if Russia agrees to pull forces from Cuba, and urged readiness to resume testing if national security demands.

Alabama integration sparks guarded state response
President Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard to prevent Governor Wallace from using troops to block Black students at white schools. Florence State College admitted its first Black student Wendell Wilkie Gunn as Birmingham and Tuskegee pupils faced refusals and boycotts. Schools reported low attendance and warned of penalties for unexcused absences under state law.
