Oslo AP report says authorities plan evacuations in large northern areas of Norway as Soviet nuclear tests raise radioactive fallout. Civil defense spokesman Sverre Servan notes 60 observation stations operate in the north to warn residents if dangerous conditions arise.
Rep Carroll D. Kearns of Pennsylvania introduces a bill to outlaw strikes not favored by a majority of affected workers. He argues the nation cannot endure economic strikes deemed unnecessary in this critical time.
The Gerry Area Joint School Committee approved pay raises for hourly and salary cafeteria workers after studies by the Finance Committee. S. E. Anderson, business manager, received a $250 raise to $8,000 annual pay, retroactive to July. Two cafeteria managers also saw salary increases, and a Wright School worker remains at $480 yearly due to Social Security.
The Corry Board of Education met at the high school to discuss the Wright School renovation. An Eckles estimate error added 1,240 to the cost due to wall thickness changes. Solicitor McKnight explained the 1,240 isn’t extra but would have been paid in the original estimate, and the board may withhold the architect fee portion as a potential remedy. A final inspection and payment of the remodeling bill installment are planned, with continuation on page three.
The Corry Area Joint School Committee failed to approve a $9,810 salary revision and adjourned to refer the issue to the full 2 man Joint Board. Elgin, Columbus and Wayne Township oppose the raises citing budget and tax limits.

President Kennedy stays in touch with the devastation from Hurricane Carla hitting Texas and Louisiana. Vice President Johnson praises Weather Bureau warnings that enabled hundreds of thousands to evacuate. The two leaders reiterated government aid for those affected and ongoing recovery efforts.
