Breakthrough Seen In New Cancer Drug
PITTSBURGH AP A University of Pittsburgh chemist says he has synthesized a scarce experimental cancer drug camptothecin. Early tests show tumor reduction up to 60 percent in intestinal and rectal cancer, but huge natural supplies are needed and toxic. Danishefsky aims to refine synthesis to make safer variants and expand research after four years of work. He notes Columbia's Stork reported a competing method, opening paths to less toxic derivatives. If useful, synthesis would be essential to mass produce camptothecin with antitumor activity and lower toxicity. He estimates three tons of raw material yield 600 grams of natural drug.

Judge Appoints New Counsel in Mitchell Murder Case
Erie County judge Lindley R. McClelland appointed William J. Cavanaugh to defend Melvin C. Mitchell, replacing withdrawn lawyers. The order restricts jail visits to relatives and friends without Cavanaugh approval, targeting alleged interference by HRC and NAACP after they sought interviews. Mitchell, 37, is charged with the Aug. 5 shooting of William Marks, a 51 year old superintendent at Walnut Creek jetty project.
