In Beaver County, Judge Robert B. McCreary instructed the jury to disregard testimony from witness McClirk who alleged that Walter Hilsta talked of shooting his father. The defendant Hilsta, 19, is on trial for the February 24 shooting of his father, the Harmony Two police chief. McClirk claimed he was forced to sign a statement, which he quoted, and later retracted it as detectives pressured him. Russell Calls U S Sacrifices Over Cuba Pact Concerns
In a letter to Senate leaders, Kennedy warned American military security must not deteriorate under the pact. Senator Goldwater vows to push for a treaty reservation delaying its effectiveness until Soviet forces withdraw from Cuba. The debate frames the treaty as a perilous path to nuclear arms restraint.
