Three Erie freight crew members injured in derailment
Three of four crew on a westbound Erie freight were injured near Buchanan Junction south of Meadville when the locomotive and five cars left the tracks at about 8:20 am Saturday. Engineer A Staley of Kerrtown suffered head cuts and bruises, D J Shroup of Meadville, a fireman, had slight cuts and bruises, and H L Smith of Meadville, a brakeman, was lightly bruised. Officials blame a defective rail or a tool left on the track, while Staley cites a worker on site as a possible factor. The freight, 20 loaded and 10 empty cars bound for Kent, Ohio, was partially resumed after wreckers removed the derailed engine and cars. The investigation continues.
