Prisoner Bolts From Erie Jail During Transport

ERIE An Erie County Jail prisoner handcuffed behind his back escaped yesterday while being taken to a preliminary hearing. Charles Arington, 21, was being moved from the county jail to the car of Constable John Carey when he bolted, knocking Carey's glasses to the ground and fleeing into an alley. He faces charges of theft receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy. Arington was linked to an alleged attempt by convicted murderer Donald Lee Chism to buy an alibi in February 1975, a matter tied to a controversial eavesdropping system in the jail. He remained at large early today.
