Erie County can cut levies while netting extra million
Erie County Tax Assessment Board told commissioners that a two millreduction in real estate levies can still yield an additional one million dollars. The board backed a 1.2 billion county appraisal by Allied Appraisal Co and proposed a 40 percent tax rate based on fair market values, suggesting no millage increase remains needed.

Sheakleyville Post Office Robbed in Mercer County A theft
Stamps and cash totaling 1641 dollars were stolen from the Sheakleyville Post Office between Sunday night and yesterday morning. Entry was gained by forcing a steel rear door and the safe opened by peeling the front and knocking out pins. The haul included 30 federal migratory waterfowl stamps and assorted postage stamps plus 76.37 in cash. Mercer substation and Butler troop headquarters are investigating.

McVay Brothers Sentenced for $60,000 Fraud
Two former Bradford attorneys, William P. McVay and James F. McVay, pleaded guilty to fraudulent conversion and embezzlement of more than $60,000. They were sentenced to one to three years by Judge Glenn E. Mencer, with restitution made and disbarment by the American Bar Association.
