Hurricanes Carla threaten a broad Gulf coast corridor from New Orleans to the Mexican border. The Weather Bureau reports the storm about 400 miles south moving west to northwest at nine mph. Evacuations and preparations intensify as Cameron Louisiana braces for impact and oil fields halt operations.
Corry and Warren high school bands led an engaging halftime show with drill team and majorettes. Directors included H. Lynn Rice and Ronald Ball for Corry, Harry Summers for Warren, with pieces “On Wisconsin” and “Notre Dame.”
Julie Belafonte wife of singer Harry Belafonte gave birth yesterday at Mount Sinai Hospital to a baby boy named David. The illness and other details are not disclosed.
Republican mayoral candidate Philip Zalaneck accuses the Corry Central Labor Council of violating a promise to hear both parties before endorsing a candidate. He claims the union pledged neutrality but backed James Hammond, and counters Hammond’s remarks on a one party system, police changes, and street maintenance while urging a nonpoliticized police and city services approach.
Carmel AP reports 43 year old Navy warrant officer Francis Beardsley will wed Helen North widow of a Navy flier at Carmel Mission. Their 18 children will attend from two reserved pews as carpenters add three bedrooms and two more bathrooms to the family home. The couple, with Beardsley father to 10 and Mrs. North mother to eight, plan a brief honeymoon after the ceremony.
Police pursue three armed suspects after a Jamestown liquor store raid that left an elderly clerk injured. Leslie B. Pennington of California and Lloyd F. Butler of unknown address remain at large west of Jamestown, while Joseph Caslas of East Chicago, Ind was captured fleeing with the group. Over 100 officers comb a 15 mile wooded area as the search continues.
Corry Instrument Co plans a five to six week construction of an insulated steel addition at its Route 6 plant. The Heinslein firm of Erie will erect it. President Hubert Vaughn says welding and heat treating will move into the new building to relieve crowding. Beginning next Monday or Tuesday the old East South street plant will reopen and part of the staff will transfer there to boost production of jet engine parts.
A former Corry man, James W. Custer, who moved with his wife to Phoenix, has been missing from his Phoenix home since June. He is believed back in Corry, while his wife remains in Phoenix. An Arizona welfare investigator asked local police to search for Custer, who left Phoenix on June 9 and bought a one way ticket to Corry. Custer’s wife suspects he may have visited Corry with a woman he previously roomed with there. Police are pursuing leads and have identified the wife Kiss as now married and living in Fatcoutr.
The Pentagon plans a major reinforcement of U S forces in Europe. About 400000 troops would boost the 250000 currently in Europe, raising total U S strength by roughly 16 percent. Initial units could begin moving soon with airlifted troops and armored personnel carriers to support the 7th Army in Germany.
President De Gaulle escaped injury when a plastic explosive charged eight pounds failed to detonate on a country road near Paris. He called it a little joke in bad taste and resumed his trip to Colombey-les-Deux-Églises after police detained an unidentified man amid reports of Algerian politics tensions and right wing activity.
State Police said Bedford area youths and a Bedford man were arrested yesterday on charges of defacing Everett High School by painting the word Bisons on the school canopy. The damage was estimated at 500 dollars.
Washington reports say Western efforts to open Berlin talks with the Soviet Union have so far been unsuccessful though U S officials remain confident negotiations may occur. Secretary of State Rusk cautioned Moscow against unilateral action and warned the Kremlin not to mistake Western desire for peace as willingness to concede to Berlin demands. Communications channels between Moscow and the West remain active.
A 55 year old man, Herbert Waite of Warren RD 1, was struck and killed by a car while walking home on a foggy Jackson xan road near Warren at 1:25 this morning. The body was hit again by a second car whose driver stopped. The first motorist, Eccles of Falconer, searched for Waite but could not locate him. Kenneth Hoffman of Warren drove by, saw Waite in the road, but could not stay to help as his car struck him as well. Coroner Lowrey said it is not clear if Waite was alive when the second hit occurred. The investigation continues. neither driver was held.
President Kennedy, in his 11th week at Hyannis Port, waited for a reply from Soviet Premier Khrushchev on a request to end atmospheric nuclear tests. Pierre Salinger said no message had been received yet as Kennedy kept in close contact with Washington for any developments in the international front.
Aluminum windows at Wright School failed to arrive on time halting the back to school setup. Workmen completed installation yesterday and janitorial staff moved in to prepare for classes on Monday. The project included extensive remodeling with new curbing along Wright Street Frontage.
The Corry office of the Pennsylvania State Employment Service and the new Buyers' Pair Inc retail outlet will relocate to the old Loblaw building on North Center Street. Opening dates will be announced soon as both establishments prepare to hire about a dozen workers for full-time and part-time positions. Buyers' Pair will offer men work clothes sporting gear and appliances while the PSES interviews applicants on West Main Street with joint leadership from Buyers' Pair and Corry Rubber Co.
