Germans Claim Maubeuge Captured In German Report

United Press reports German claims of Maubeuge fall with about 40000 French and allied troops captured. Paris says Allies pushed German positions in night and morning actions. Other items include British action against a German mine laying craft and Austrian harbor clearances near Antivari, plus unrest in Austria aiding Russia.

Robbery Case Settled In Erie County Courts

The case against Walter Porter and Hy 4and arl Wonton of North Wast was nolle pressed in Erie County courts, ending the matter with the three defendants paying costs over fifty dollars. Guignon store burglars consented to the arrangement, and a third man from North East previously arrested confessed then recanted, leaving unresolved evidence.

Assessors Progress on City Valuation Essays

City assessors Eaton and Westley report good progress on south side assessments. They expect to finish by week end, with the First and parts of the Fourth wards largely completed. Notably, a Ridge Street estate now owned by General Lo Ran’s widow has been identified for tax valuation. North Side work on the Second and Third wards is planned to start by early next week.

Brakeshoe Plant Opens With 35 Workers At Start

The United States Brakeshoe Company’s big local plant began operation Monday with 35 men employed and plans for more. Walton plant equipment arriving gradually will be installed to speed production and expand the local operation as orders grow. New offices will be built and a rapid ramp up is expected, with about 50 more workers anticipated by fall if work continues to surge.

German Center Retreating Before Allied Pressure

Bordeaux reports the German center is retreating after an attempt to force the French center failed. The German line is breaking while French artillery proves effective. Maubeuge, claimed captured by Germans, still resists.

Man Serves Time After Failing to Clear Fine

James Drake, who hobbled west of the city, failed to settle a prior fine with the local police. He ventured into town last evening and was arrested, jailed, and began serving the six day ultimatum imposed earlier. Rumors say more papers may be served when the sentence expires.

RIFLED HOME OF CROWELL REPORTED IN BRIS COUNTY

The home of the late Andrew Crowell, who died in the county home at Bris week, was rifled by prowlers. Concord township reports say the house was entered since it became vacant and much personal property, including clothing, was carried off. Wanton damage was also wrought at the former home.

Mrs Ryan Dies After Long Corry Residence

Mrs Margaret Ryan widow of Andrew Ryan died this morning at four oclock at the family home on Sixth Avenue Corry. She had lived in the city for over fifty years and was eighty years old. Surviving are three daughters Miss Tate H Ryan Mrs Nelile Ryan and Mrs John Keefe and one son Andrew Ryan all of Corry. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at nine thirty at St Thomas Church.
