Corry Bond Debacle Of 1873 Echoes Through Time
The 1873 panic triggered a failed $106000 bond issue in Corry eight percent interest for ten years. Gibbs and Sterrett, main beneficiaries, sold property to R S Battles in 1882 leaving Corry to cover costs. Bonds defaulted in 1883, declared illegal, and Kerr sued. Courts eventually favored bondholders, and a 1886 compromise funded cash and refunding bonds, ending the bitter fight.
