The president announced the United States will proceed with a six nation plan to foster peaceful atomic technology, keeping Russia on the outside for now. Britain Canada France Belgium Congo South Africa and Australia are named as participants or potential participants. The move follows Moscow’s rejection of a prior joint pool proposal and signals a continuing split over formal talks with Red China and outlawing atomic weapons.
Large enrollment at St Edward's parish school begins the 1954-55 term with many pupils registered and allowed to go home for the day. Full class schedules start tomorrow. Enrollment exceeds last year but an exact figure is not available. the rise is causing scheduling adjustments.
National tally shows 616 lives lost over the Labor Day weekend. Traffic crashes caused 347 deaths from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight, the lowest since 1948, while 90 died by drowning and 79 in other accidents. The total surpasses 574 last year but remains below the 658 Labor Day record in 1951.
Nationalist warplanes bombed Red junks and ships along the China coast. A Red gun boat and over 100 wooden junks plus five motorized vessels were damaged, with no official indication of a mass invasion fleet toward Quemoy. Quemoy endured artillery fire as Nationalist forces pressed strikes against Red batteries nearby. Two U.S. officers were killed in Friday’s bombardment.
City police over the weekend issued two more citations for running traffic lights. Archie Spence of Mildred Pa. was cited at Center Street and Columbus Avenue at 6:25 p.m. Saturday. Morris L. Way of R D J Spring Creek was cited at Center and Main Street at 11:15 p.m. Sunday.
Corry residents and others attended a multi day Labor Day celebration by the Corry Junior Chamber of Commerce. Funds raised support a two way radio system for local fire and police, with prizes including U S Savings Bonds and merchandise. A two division parade featured numerous floats bands and fire departments as traffic control was aided by Civil Defence volunteers and a nine man police force.
An 18 year old Pittsburgh youth John B Hinkel fell asleep at the wheel and caused a crash near the Wattsburg Fair Grounds injuring him and leaving a passenger, William Ames, with a facial arm laceration. The car owned by W F and Doris Amen of New Kensington was wrecked after snapping a utility pole and wrapping ferries around the struck area. The incident occurred after leaving Lake Pleasant around 1 am.

Coroner's inquest told 25 of 28 passengers aboard a Dutch KLM airliner died from asphyxiation due to gas fumes. One escapee survived with 28 others injured. two bodies unrecovered. Corry cyclist Cloyd Committees, age 30, was injured yesterday when his motorcycle collided with a car on North Center Street near Trinity Street. He was treated at the Brackett Balance Hospital for a deep cut to the right leg, facial lacerations, and contusions. Carl Schieffert, 19, of Lowellville, driving a car from Turner service station, failed to yield and was cited for not yielding right of way.
A 15 year old Corry girl admitted thefts from Grice Jewelry on North Center Street after Saturday questioning by local police. She said she stole a ring valued at 676, admitted taking a tie ring but denied a wristwatch and bracelet, then a contralto led to more items being recovered. Her mother said she is arranging for the girl to move in with her father due to strained parents.
Britain suggests September date for London foreign ministers meeting to discuss West Germany rearmament. Italy the Netherlands and several nations back the timing. US Secretary of State Dulles could set London date as SAATO talks progress in Manila. The gathering aims to discuss restoring West German sovereignty in rearming the West Germans. The conference includes Britain plus France West Germany Canada Belgium and Luxembourg. The altered plan follows failure to secure Paris Assembly ratification of European army proposal. POLIO VICTIM DIES William W. Tong de 17 of Williamsport died of polio becoming the county's second polio death this year. He died shortly after admission to Williamsport Hospital.
Police from Lawainee Park investigate a cottage fire that injured Robert Middleton and involved Cecil Remage amid a night of drinking. The Middleton family of five children stayed with neighbors as Robert was found unconscious 500 feet from the home and transported to Stem Memorial Hospital. No insurance coverage found on the dwelling or its contents valued at about 1 000 dollars each.
State Police report only two traffic accidents in the Corry area over the Labor Day weekend as highway travel remained heavy. One crash on the Gorry Clymer road involved David Berdak and John Van Chur with $500 damage and no injuries. Another collision near Mystic Park injured Betty Jamieson and Raymond Phillips, with $328 total damage to both vehicles.
Two auto accidents were investigated by city police on Saturday and Sunday with mostly property damage. A car driven by Cualimir Kaloska 82 of 0b West Washington street collided with Furry Lieboyita 49 of Hamilton Ont on North Center street Sunday afternoon at 350 PM. Another crash on Smith and Center streets involved Lawrence Rayner 45 of Jamestown and Robert Parris D-6 Meadville with Rayner saying his car was tapped and hit from the rear by Parris truck the brakes allegedly failing. Political charges loom as four of 17 Puerto Rican Nationalists plead guilty to conspiracy to overthrow the U S government by force and violence.
Gorey firemen were called at 1:60 this morning when a railroad car caught fire from a hot box in the east end yards near the Crystal Coat Co. A booster line was used to douse the blaze which had spread to the wooden floor. The fire was set off by a westbound freight train crew after a hot journal was spotted. Yard damage was minor.
Seven persons were treated at Corry Memorial Hospital over Labor Day weekend for injuries from a series of accidents. Jonsile Akem, 68, of 144 Went Washington Street, fractured her right arm after tripping on a tent rope at the Watteburger Fair Saturday. Abe was admitted with injuries and listed in good condition. Bernard Blakely, 1 year old son of Mr and Mrs. Robert Blakely, 206 Went Frederick Street, had two lacerations over the right eye from a fall at home Friday night. Alton Sperry, 46, of BD 4, Corry, underwent X-ray examination for a possible fracture after a Sunday fall and was released. Edna Brenner, 22, of BD 2 Spare Vansburg, suffered a right femur laceration from a home knife wound, treated and released yesterday. Lynn A. Burlingame, 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Burlingame of ID 4 Sugar Grove, sustained a laceration on the upper lip from a fence fall and was released. Patsy Clark, 14, daughter of Mrs. Ruth Clark of 320 Eagle Street, sprained her left ankle while playing ball Saturday afternoon and was treated and released. Dayton White, 9, RD 3 Erie, was taken to the hospital for removal of a jammed hook from his left hand and later able to return home.
A vertical takeoff craft weighing 3% tons lifted itself into the air without wings or rotors, using downward jet streams. It hovered for about 10 minutes under full control, then landed. Duncan Sandys spoke at the Society of British Aircraft Constructors dinner, calling it not a traditional aircraft but an aero-engine with a pilot on top.
United Nations, New York. The United States requests an early Security Council meeting to discuss the unprovoked Soviet attack on a U S Navy Neptune aircraft off the Siberian coast. Nine of the 11 aboard were rescued after drifting on a raft. one Ensign remained missing. The incident follows Moscow’s protest that the U S plane violated Soviet airspace.
