Gasoline Taxes Rise Despite Lower Fuel Prices

Before the war government costs and taxes grew while public impact remained muted. Oil industry efficiency absorbed tax burdens. gasoline prices fell from 30 cents in 1921 to 18 1/2 cents by 1992, yet taxes rose from under 1 cent to about 6 cents per gallon by 1941. Motor fuel taxes reached 1.2 billion dollars, nearly 7 percent of wholesale value, totaling 1.741 billion. If unchecked, taxes threaten living standards as production can no longer offset them.

He cites Nelson-Wilson, Hull-Welles, and Wallace-Jones clashes as emblematic, predicting postwar reconsolidation will curb the “family feuding” only after the war ends.

Union City Firm Denied Tax Appeal

Erie judges Evans and Waite in a joint Erie county ruling rejected the York and Foster Company appeal against a 1942 tax assessment of 67,420 on Union City properties. The firm argued sale value and 70 percent of it should govern the assessment, but the court discharged exceptions, ruling public sale value did not support lower taxation.
